John Gardner Chapter: November 2, 2014 Meeting Minutes
JGTSCA President John Symons was in the Chair. He called
the Meeting to order at 1:32.
1. Introduction of Members, Welcome Guests and New
John Symons, Jim Clark, Sandy D’Esopo, Bill Armitage,
Bill Rutherford, Phil Behney, Andy Strode, Peter Vermilya,
Karen Rutherford, Ellie Czarnowski, George Spragg, Laurie
Iturino and Wil Iturino were present.
John Symons thanked Wil Iturino for his presentation on decoy
carving at the October Meeting.
2. Minutes from October 5, 2014 meeting
The Minutes for the 10/05/2014 Meeting were unanimously accepted
as published on the JGTSCA Website.
3. Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Karen Rutherford presented a Treasurer’s Report
which consisted of Journal entries for the 2014 Fiscal Calendar
to date. The Bank Balance on 10/31/2014 was $4,677.09. Her
Report was accepted unanimously as presented.
She also asked JGTSCA members present to comment on her list
of thirty six paid up member e-mail addresses. Ellie Czarnowski
will compare it to a list which she has recently updated.
4. Old Business
a. 2014 Dues report
The Dues Report was incorporated in the Treasurer’ Report.
b. “Nina” construction
George Spragg reported that progress was proceeding adequately.
Planking is still underway.
Bill Rutherford said that work on the mast is also underway.
Bill will be on hand at the Avery Point shop every Wednesday
from 9am until 3pm and would welcome those who can stop by
c. Fleet Report
John Symons reported that he is nearly finished working on
the SUSAN B HOLLAND’s exterior. Members present decided
that a name plaque should be built. John and Phil Behney will
see to this.
The Club dories will need work.
Karen reported that the name plaques for the dories are in
the pipe line.
d. Chaisson Dory
Sandy said he planned to complete the rebuilding of his Chaisson
dory and will remove the boat from beside the Club house with
help from George Spragg.
e. Adirondack Prototype
Bill Armitage reported that his Adirondack Guide boat based
pulling boat is in storage for the winter.
f. December 2014 Meeting
Rob Pittaway has secured the Custom House Museum in New London
for the JGTSCA December 7th Meeting. The meeting will take
place at 1:30pm followed by a pot luck lunch.
Members present unanimously voted to donate $100.00 to the
Custom House Museum.
g. Monthly Regular Business Meeting time.
Members present unanimously voted, starting in January of
2015, to hold quarterly business meetings on the first Sunday
of each quarter at 1:30 pm. On the other two months of the
quarter, business meetings will occur on the first Friday
of the month and will combine the business meeting with a
pot luck supper and will begin at 5:30 pm. All business meetings
will be held at the JGTSCA Avery Point Community Boat House
unless otherwise announced.
A properly labelled coffee can will be available on top of
the refrigerator strictly for money contributions for sodas,
snacks and pot luck food. The can will not be used for other
purposes such as receipt of annual dues payments and for reimbursement
for club oriented expenditures. Monies for the sodas, snacks
and potluck food will be recorded separately from regular
Club financial records.
Ellie Czarnowski will prepare a 2015 meeting calendar.
h. Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival (MASCF) Report
Bill Rutherford reported that he and Karen participated in
the 2014 MASCF, one of the best to date. He encouraged all
members to consider going to the 2015 event.
i. Club House queue
The club dories will have first priority for shop space for
maintenance. John Symons will follow with his project.
j. Club shop tools
Jim Clark reported that the sanders were in good shape but
that the vacuum cleaner hose and brush attachment needed replacement.
Jim and John Symons will work on this. Andy Strode said he
had repaired the dust extractor and suggested all member should
use it when possible. Bill Armitage said he had recently successfully
cleaned the club house using a leaf blower to remove accumulated

Bill Rutherford was nominated for Vice President.
There were no nominations for Treasurer.
Voting for officers will take place at the December 7th meeting.
b. Propane gas tanks
There are four propane gas tanks in the Club house. The club
needs only a working tank and a spare for the propane grill.
Two tanks need to go back to their respective owners.
c. Mamacoke Island Row
Phil Behney put together a list of e-mails for persons at
the meeting who were interested in rowing to Mamacoke Island
this fall. He will e-mail to the list the date and time as
plans develop. The island is on the west side of the Thames
River directly across the river from the Navy Base. Launchings
could take place from under the Gold Star Bridge. Info on

d. Solstice Row
There will be a Solstice Row on Sunday, 12/21/2014. Participants
should meet at the Mystic location of the West Mystic Shipyard
at a time to be published by e-mail by Phil Behney as plans
develop. All members are invited to meet after the row at
6:30pm at the Harp and Hound, located in downtown Mystic.

7. Motion to Adjourn:
The Meeting was adjourned at 2:31 pm. The next Members Meeting
will take place Sunday, December 7th, 2014, 1:30pm, at the
Custom House Museum in New London. Speaker and pot luck lunch
