John Gardner Chapter: May 2008 Meeting Minutes
The John Gardner Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.
Minutes for the May 4, 2008 membership meeting of the John
Gardner Chapter of the TSCA.
President Behney in Avery Point Boathouse called the meeting
to order at 2:04.P.M. following the Pine Island clean up project.
In attendance were Pres. Behney, George Spragg, John Maxson,
Bill Armitage, Larry and Donna McGee, Rob Pittaway, John Hacunda,
Chauncy Rucker and John Symons.
A motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the Secretary’s
Report from the April 2008 meeting with the following correction:
Stop and Shop was not the provider of trash bags and gloves
for the Pine Isl. Cleanup rather Shop Rite.
The Treasurer’s report read by Bill Armitage reported
expenses of $16 for LP gas and an income of $15 from dues
leaving a checkbook balance of $3,516.30 for the month of
Pres. Behney and other members reported on the success of
the Pine Island cleanup project that was still in progress
by the Sea Scouts and their leaders from Sea Scout Ship SSS
Dragon 584 who soon arrived to join us at the grill for hamburgers,
hot dogs, chicken wings, soda and other refreshments. A suggestion
was passed along from Russell Smith that some fun be added
to the project next year such as awarding a prize for the
most unusual or biggest, smallest, worst, etc. piece of trash.
One accident was reported. The dog “Chloe” was
hit by the crash boat propeller and was taken to the vets
for treatment. George Spragg provided interesting history
about Pine Island very appropriate for our Earth Day celebration
Boathouse upkeep and Activities:
- Chuck’s Swampscott Dory is outside
- John Maxson’s fearing dory is completed
and taken home.
- Bill Armitage has his new Solo Guide boat
- One of our AP dories damaged during the
windstorm is under repair.
- Phil Behney’s Avery Pt. Dory. The
hull is assembled.

Bill Armitage reported that he will cancel his plans to enter
the “Raid on Essex” if he continues being unsuccessful
in obtaining details about the race.
Participation in the Essex, Mass. race is still planned.
Several members ( J. Symons, A. Strode, C. Rucker ) volunteered
to conduct the Nautical Tag Sale, June 14. We were reminded
about limiting our newspaper ads due to high costs. John Hacunda
will use “Craig’s List” on the Internet
to solicit donations of paraphernalia. The club will not offer
anything for sale that will require land fill deposal if it
Pres. Behney announced the cancellation this year of the
Small Craft Workshop by the Mystic Seaport. John Maxson proposed
that we organize an event to replace it such as displaying
club built boats at a park in New London.
The members voted free JGTSCA membership to Avery Point Campus
Next meeting is scheduled for 1:30 P.M., Sunday, June 1, 2008
at the Avery Point boathouse.
