The John Gardner Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.

Minutes for the May 4, 2008 membership meeting of the John Gardner Chapter of the TSCA.

President Behney in Avery Point Boathouse called the meeting to order at 2:04.P.M. following the Pine Island clean up project. In attendance were Pres. Behney, George Spragg, John Maxson, Bill Armitage, Larry and Donna McGee, Rob Pittaway, John Hacunda, Chauncy Rucker and John Symons.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the Secretary’s Report from the April 2008 meeting with the following correction: Stop and Shop was not the provider of trash bags and gloves for the Pine Isl. Cleanup rather Shop Rite.

The Treasurer’s report read by Bill Armitage reported expenses of $16 for LP gas and an income of $15 from dues leaving a checkbook balance of $3,516.30 for the month of April.

Old Business:

Pres. Behney and other members reported on the success of the Pine Island cleanup project that was still in progress by the Sea Scouts and their leaders from Sea Scout Ship SSS Dragon 584 who soon arrived to join us at the grill for hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, soda and other refreshments. A suggestion was passed along from Russell Smith that some fun be added to the project next year such as awarding a prize for the most unusual or biggest, smallest, worst, etc. piece of trash. One accident was reported. The dog “Chloe” was hit by the crash boat propeller and was taken to the vets for treatment. George Spragg provided interesting history about Pine Island very appropriate for our Earth Day celebration event.

  • John Maxson’s fearing dory is completed and taken home.
  • Bill Armitage has his new Solo Guide boat well underway.
  • One of our AP dories damaged during the windstorm is under repair.

New Business:

Bill Armitage reported that he will cancel his plans to enter the “Raid on Essex” if he continues being unsuccessful in obtaining details about the race.
Participation in the Essex, Mass. race is still planned.

Several members ( J. Symons, A. Strode, C. Rucker ) volunteered to conduct the Nautical Tag Sale, June 14. We were reminded about limiting our newspaper ads due to high costs. John Hacunda will use “Craig’s List” on the Internet to solicit donations of paraphernalia. The club will not offer anything for sale that will require land fill deposal if it doesn’t sell.

Pres. Behney announced the cancellation this year of the Small Craft Workshop by the Mystic Seaport. John Maxson proposed that we organize an event to replace it such as displaying club built boats at a park in New London.

The members voted free JGTSCA membership to Avery Point Campus students.

Next meeting is scheduled for 1:30 P.M., Sunday, June 1, 2008 at the Avery Point boathouse.

Motion to Adjourn at 2:30.
